Finding Purpose Through Entrepreneurship

entrepreneurship

If you know you are a future entrepreneur and are in the “pre-idea phase” - listen up, this is for you.

You may be like we were a little over a year ago. You know you want to work for yourself, have freedom in your day-to-day, and build a business. But you don’t know where to get started. That’s ok.

Most people who have “made it” in entrepreneurship don’t speak to the “pre-idea” phase. It’s a critical part of the process that doesn’t get enough attention.

If you are looking to find purpose through entrepreneurship and don’t know where to start, begin by using these tips:

  1. Don’t force it, create space for it.

It’s easy in a society that has conditioned us to “go fast” and “hustle hard” for us to feel like we need to force a business idea and rush it to market. Create space in your life for ideas to flow freely. For us, that meant taking time for long walks, meditation, and creative projects. You’ll be surprised by the idea that will flow when you remove distractions and make space for creativity and free-thinking.

  2. Find the intersection between a need in the market and something you care about.

We know this is a lot easier said than done. We remember being told this early on and instantly panicking - what do I care about? Again, don’t force it. Start by keeping a journal or notes tab on your phone. As you think of things you are passionate about, write them down. As you find problems that need to be solved, write them down. Over time, you will start to see a theme between the two columns. Sometimes the idea is as simple as providing a service for something that you enjoy doing and would do for free.

  3. Be open-minded, be flexible, and know when to move on.

There’s so much pressure to come up with the idea and sometimes it takes just trying a couple of things out. Don’t be afraid to learn something new. Learn a new skill. Take a class. Enroll in an online course. Be open to all the possibilities, but don’t hold on to them so tightly that you can’t move on if it isn’t a good fit.

  4. It doesn’t always have to be an earthshattering idea to get started.

Don’t be afraid to start because you feel like the idea has been taken. It’s ok if someone else is doing it. No one else can do it the way that you can. It’s ok if you’re providing a service that someone else is already providing. Don’t copy anyone but it’s ok to do something that is exclusively novel.

  5. Just start.

Yes, it’s that simple. It’s also ok to start something and get down that path and realize that you actually want to do something else. It’s just as helpful to know what you don’t wanna do, to know what you do want to do.

Take a deep breath. You got this. We’re cheering you on.
